Early life

Timotea Barbosa was born on August 22, 1860 in the table mountain settlement of Mesa de Ramos to Pablo Barbosa and Petra Curiel. Timotea was baptized on August 26 at the municipal parish in Ameca by the priest Prudencio González.[2]

Ancestral background

Pablo and Petra, Timotea's parents, married on May 20, 1841 in the city of Ameca. On the marriage act, the priest states that the bride and groom reside in the town of "Los Barvosas" (an illiterate variant of "Los Barbosa"), which means that Pablo and Petra's settled in the town in the 1830s.

Her paternal grandparents were the criollos Ramón Cipriano Barbosa y Aguilar, born in Cocula, and María Marcelina Mendoza Montaño. Her maternal grandparents were the mestizo Manuel Curiel Zárate and the criolla Juana María de Jesús Ramos y Aumada.

Supplies and the Barbosa ranch

Her parents were wealthy enough to supply the whole town of Los Barbosa with queso blanco, or white cheese, and fine linen for the residents clothing. It is probable that the donations were made to the less fortunate, in this case the workers in the Hacienda San José de Miravalle who in that time resided in Los Barbosa. Timotea helped her parents with the donations. Don Pablo Barbosa had his cattle ranch in the southwestern part of the town today known as El Potrerito. He had 25 paradas of cattle roaming inside the large stone corral. He also had a chapel built in his property, various barns, stables and even a special house for church offerings.

Marriage, children, and later life

Timotea, at the age of 19, fell in love with the womanizing, dancing Gregorio Tapia López who was a mestizo. Gregorio already had the dubious reputation of a womanizer and gambler. Without the approval of her father, Gregorio and Timtoea married on May 3, 1880; before having their first son Eduardo in 1881. Their witnesses were Francisco Núñez and Francisca Tapia. The relationship of Timotea toward her father loosened and became tense, she feared of his disapproval. Petra, on the other hand, was calm and understanding. When she married Gregorio, she was disowned of the Barbosa inheritance. She had other children: José Eduardo, María Juliana, María Candelaria, María Cruz, José Manuel, Zeferina, and Heliodoro. She died in 1930 in Los Barbosa and was interred in the community cemetery of Santa Cruz de las Flores.
